De Macht van de 'State of the Union Address'

Vanavond, Amerikaanse tijd, geeft President Obama zijn State of the Union Address, een beetje vergelijkbaar met onze Troonrede. De verwachtingen zijn hooggespannen, omdat men hoopt dat de "Address" historische waarde zal hebben.

Hier zijn zes State of the Union Addresses die veel invloed hebben gehad (en sommigen nog steeds) op de Amerikaanse politiek.

1. The Monroe Doctrine (2 december, 1823)

In een geschreven bericht aan het Congres, waarschuwde President James Madison dat Europa zich niet bemoeide met de politieke zaken van het Westelijk Halfrond.

Quote: "We owe it, therefore, to candor and to the amicable relations existing between the United States and those (European) powers to declare that we should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety.

2. Gold in California (5 december, 1848)

President James Polk bracht de goudkoorts in Californie op gang – "de '49ers" – door de kostbare ontdekking te benoemen in een geschreven bericht aan het Congress.

Quote: "It was known that mines of the precious metals existed to a considerable extent in California at the time of its acquisition. Recent discoveries render it probable that these mines are more extensive and valuable than was anticipated."

3. The Civil War (1 december, 1862)

President Abraham Lincoln schreef met verve over wat er op het spel stond met de Burgeroorlog die toen aan de gang was.

Quote: "Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance or insignificance can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down in honor or dishonor to the latest generation … In giving freedom to the slave we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give and what we preserve. We shall nobly save or meanly lose the last best hope of earth."

4, The Four Freedoms (6 januari, 1941)

Slechts 11 maanden voor Pearl Harbor, vertelde Nazi Duitsland en Keizerlijk Japan dat de VS de principes van vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van geloof, vrijheid van behoefte,  en de vrijheid van angst altijd zullen verdedigen.

Quote: "In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms."

5. The War on Poverty (8 januari, 1964)

President Lyndon Johnson blikt vast vooruit op een concept van sociale wetgeving die later bekend werd als de 'Great Society'.

Quote: "This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America."

6. Axis of Evil (29 januari, 2002)

Een jaar voor de invasie van Irak, stuurde President George W. Bush een duidelijke boodschap aan het  adres van Saddam Hussein, en de leiders van Iran en Noord-Korea.

Quote: "States like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world."

Gaat President Obama straks een State of the Union geven die historie maakt? Over het algemeen maakt de historie dit zelf uit. Het is in ieder geval al bekend dat hij aandacht zal geven aan de nucleaire test die Noord-Korea zojuist heeft gedaan.
